Airbus’ new plane the people built

Flying quite clearly has its highs and lows, and we’re not just talking about the various cruising altitudes. While the perks of air travel are undeniable, namely the fact it makes the world your oyster, it is not without its cons.

Flying long haul, unless up the pointy end of the plane, is still largely an uncomfortable and exhausting experience. Thankfully, Airbus are aware of this and are on the case to improve the experience for all of us.

Having revealed their latest cabin design, called Airspace, in London during March, Airbus credited the internet for many of the changes in the new design. Executive Vice President of Strategy and Marketing at Airbus, Dr Kiran Rao said that it was customers who inspired designers “through social media”, adding “they’re comparing the experience from one airline to another. This is what has driven the change from what we’ve done in the past.”

Drawing on feedback from social media, the new A330neo aircraft features wider seats with the under-seat control boxes for in-flight entertainment removed, which means, wait for it, more legroom! With a more modular design for the cabin, airlines will be able to customise the layout of their planes, leading to wider aisles that don’t need to be taken up by trollies or bathrooms.

With more room for overhead luggage, the new design even has mood and lighting features to leave passengers less disorientated after flights. With built-in broadband connectivity, passengers will also have the ability to use their phones and tablets, including making calls and sending messages.

The new plane is launching as soon as 2017. Why not take a look at the promo video for Airbus’s new A330neo design and tell us your thoughts?
