With the Aussie dollar on a slippery slope, travel budgets aren’t going as far as they did. However, accommodation costs in Asia are actually dropping.
The Hotels.com Hotel Price Index shows that Asia is the only region in which hotel stays were less expensive in 2014 compared to 2013, and were only slightly higher than they were 10 years ago.
Vietnam, Thailand and Sri Lanka have all seen a reduction in hotel rates, with hotels in Hanoi, Phnom Penh, Chiang Mai, Ho Chi Minh and Bangkok now rating as some of the most affordable in the world. However, if you’re planning on travelling to China, Hong Kong or Japan, you might wish to reconsider, as rates in these countries have risen slightly.
Rio, Honolulu, San Francisco, London and Paris have all seen the average hotel rate increase by double digits.
Perhaps, unsurprisingly, New York is the most expensive city when it comes to hotel stays – a whopping $317 on average per night. And even closer to home, New Zealand accommodation has seen a 15 per cent increase for Australians, with Fiji not far behind at 12 per cent.
