Aussies love a good, long drive but which scenic trip is the best in the country?
Lovers of the open road rejoice, for Australia has been blessed with some of the most scenic and spectacular drives on earth. From the wine regions of South Australia to the wilderness of the Yarra Ranges National Park, our beautiful countryside provides some truly incredible opportunities for exploration.
With so much to discover, it can be hard to narrow down the best Australian road trips. Now though, in a poll conducted by dash camera manufacturer Nextbase, the Great Ocean Road in Victoria has been voted Australia’s best and most popular holiday drive.
With 25 per cent of the vote, the sensational drive follows the 664-kilometre route from Torquay, south of Geelong, to the small fishing village of Port Fairy, west of Warnambool, passing through picturesque towns such as Lorne and Apollo Bay along the way.
As recommended by Visit Victoria, the trip is best enjoyed at a leisurely pace, taking at least three days to fully appreciate the endless rolling hills and breathtaking views.
Voted into second place was the rugged coastal drive between Cairns and Cape York, with the podium completed by the Margaret River Coast drive in Western Australia.
Nextbase ambassador and 2017 Bathurst 1000 winning supercar driver David Reynolds was thrilled with the outcome of the survey, commending the Great Ocean Road’s “amazing scenery along the coastline and into the Otway’s rainforest”.
“We all love hitting the road with family or mates, stopping in at a local bakery on the way; there is no better way to see the country,” said Mr Reynolds.
Other Australian road trips that received votes included:
Tasmanian Ring Road, Tasmania Perth to Ningaloo, Western Australia Kangaroo Island, South Australia Darwin to Katherine, Northern Territory Grand Pacific Drive, New South Wales Great Alpine Road, Victoria Adelaide to Coober Pedy, South Australia Great Green Way, Queensland Lismore Loop, New South Wales
