If there’s one thing you can say about Aussies, it’s this: We love our dogs! If you’re considering a local holiday with your pooch in tow, these marvellous dog destinations are great places to help both you and your dog unwind.
For a beach holiday: Noosa, Qld
Now you and your dog can both catch some sun! Noosa is wonderfully dog-friendly and you’ll find many dog-accommodating hotels, beach houses, cottages, B&Bs and caravan parks in the area.
Nearby dog-friendly beaches include the beach at Noosa Spit (which is an off-leash area), as well as Peregian Beach, Moffat Beach, Coolum Beach and Sunshine Beach.
For a city escape: Melbourne, Vic
There are plenty of dog-friendly hotels in and around the city of Melbourne and dogs are allowed in most parks and on many beaches here, but for the best canine and human experiences, we recommend Albert Park (which has off-leash areas) and the Royal Botanic Gardens.
For a national park romp: Belair National Park, SA
If getting out into the bush with your furry friend is high on your travel wishlist, Belair National Park will be an 835-hectare haven.
Located just 15 minutes from Adelaide, this park offers plenty of trails, BBQ and picnic spots, and tennis courts. Your dog can go anywhere here as long as it’s kept on-leash.
For a Luxury Harbour Treat: Pier One Sydney Harbour, NSW
Ever wanted to be pampered with your pooch? Just check in to Pier One, which offers luxury accommodation, incredible views, fine dining … oh, and pet pampering packages!
Your dog will love its exquisite trampoline bed and proximity to sights such as the Sydney Harbour Bridge and The Rocks. Best of all, there are no limits on dog sizes and all dogs are welcome.
For a camping adventure: Alexander Bay, WA
Camp out at Alexander Bay in Esperance and you’ll get the best of both bush and coastline exploring. You can bring your pooch with you as long as it stays on a leash when in the campsite.
If you want to take your dog for a thrilling run here, head to the beach between the Tanker Jetty and Straker Street.
For a beautiful road trip: Great Ocean Road, Vic
You’ll get to see some fabulous sights on the Great Ocean Road: the Twelve Apostles and the coastline are impressive (especially on a blue-skyed day) and each of the towns is quaint and dazzling in its own way.
Taking your dog on this striking road trip can be lots of fun (assuming your dog is car-travel friendly) and there are lots of places you can explore together.
One of our faves is the Great Otway National Park. Dogs are allowed in designated areas in the park on leash, and there are currently two trial off-lead dog beaches.
Accommodation-wise, dogs are allowed in many Otway camping sites, but if you prefer a little luxury, consider Countrywide Cottages in Bambra, which is wonderfully pet-friendly.
