Hong Kong reinventing tourism

The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) has set its sights firmly on the future, outlining a three-phase plan to reinvigorate tourism in the area.

At a web conference last month, HKTB executive director Dane Cheng said Hong Kong was currently in the first phase, which entailed preparing the recovery plan for stakeholders.

Next is the recovery phase, set to take place when the pandemic shows signs of abating.

At this time, the tourism board will turn its attention to the local market to promote a positive vibe by encouraging locals to rediscover different neighbourhoods and community cultures so as to send a positive message to visitors and restore their confidence in the territory.

Meanwhile, the HKTB will launch tactical promotions in selected markets to stimulate interest in visiting Hong Kong.

The third phase of the plan includes a relaunch, with events and a new tourism brand campaign to rebuild Hong Kong’s tourism image.

HKTB chairman Dr Y. K. Pang said the COVID-19 pandemic had posed unprecedented challenges to Hong Kong tourism.

“The tourism landscape will be reshaped,” Dr Yang said.

“In the post-pandemic world, we will see a shift in preference and behaviour among travellers – the public health conditions of destinations, and the hygiene standards of transportations, hotels and other tourism facilities will become a top priority; people will prefer short-haul breaks and shorter itineraries; wellness-themed trips will become a new trend.

“It is, in fact, an ideal time for us to review and rethink Hong Kong’s position in the global tourism market and elevate service standards.”

Is Hong Kong on your list of potential destinations when the pandemic subsides? Where will you travel?
