Patrick Ventura is the manager of New Caledonia’s Challenge Organisation. Challenge Organisation is a popular local adventure sport operator and event organiser covering everything from kayak trips, treks, long distance running and adventure races, and Patrick is only too happy to offer his insider’s tips to Noumea.
Where did you find best coffee?
I always start my day with an early morning coffee at la Case at Orphelinat Bay.
Where did you have the best cocktail?
I can’t say for certain it is the best, but 1881 at Nouvelle is hard to top. It is definitely one of the best places to have a drink in the evening.
Where did you enjoy the best breakfast?
Breakfast is not my favourite meal of the day, but I do know there is an excellent spread with some great fresh produce at Château Royal Hotel.
Where was the best local view?
My favourite view is of Orphelinat Bay from atop Mount Venus. You have full aerial views of the UNESCO World Heritage Lagoon and the breathtaking mountainside – definitely a must do.
What is one thing you can do for free?
The best thing about Noumea is being so close to the ocean. I enjoy a long walk along the bays from Baie des Citrons to Sainte Marie Bay, at sunrise or sunset; you can’t beat it.
What is something that only a local would know?
Sainte Marie Island is our best-kept secret. Just 10 minutes from the centre of Noumea, and yet it feels as if it’s in the middle of nowhere.
What was your favourite thing to do in and around Noumea?
Walking to Malaoui Peak from Yahoue or Koghis Auberge is a beautiful walk through the rainforest, with amazing views of the city of Noumea and its bays when you reach the summit.
Why do you love Noumea?
It’s such a great lifestyle: no stress and no traffic in the city, and not to mention the beautiful sea and sun all year-round.
