Thailand is becoming a hot destination and little wonder. It’s affordable, accessible and the mix of modern and traditional culture, plus tropical resorts and beautiful beaches makes it a highly desirable destination.
But what were once the most visited parts of the country, Phuket and Bangkok are being overlooked for a much underrated, yet exciting region.
According to Skyscanner research, Krabi has seen an 11 per cent increase in bookings in the last year.
“While Bangkok ranks highly as the fourth favourite international holiday destination for Aussies, we noticed some interesting trends while looking at our data,” said Skyscanner Senior Manager, Michael Grierson.
“Phuket, which ranks eighth internationally, showed very strong growth in bookings in 2017. This suggests to us that Phuket could eventually overtake Bangkok as the new favourite Thai destination amongst Aussies,” said Mr Grierson.
“While Krabi ranks much further down the list, the 11% increase in bookings 2017 suggests it could be a future favourite. It seems we’re now in love with Thailand and constantly looking to explore further than Bangkok.”
Krabi is on the west coast mainland and is considered the gateway town to the thousands of islands in the Andaman Sea.
Average flight prices to Krabi from Australia are around $761 and bungalow accommodation can be found on the outlying islands from as little as $25 a day, making Krabi an attractive and inexpensive destination.
Travellers can visit the Taratuo marine park, party at Koh Lipe, rent bungalows or camp on the beaches of Koh Adang and Koh Tarutao, or just enjoy the epitome of sustainable tourism on the tiny island of Koh Bulon Lae.
You could have the true deserted island experience at Koh Pai or go mainstream at the more developed Koh Lanta – Thailand’s version of Byron Bay (and probably a lot cheaper than Byron!).
August is one of the cheapest times of the year to head to Krabi, when you’ll save around 10 per cent on the average fare there. Otherwise, book your trip for May.
