What to expect when visiting WA

As Australia’s largest state, it’s hardly surprising that Western Australia has so much to offer visitors. If you’re in need of a little coaxing to convince you to head west, here’s a taste of what you can expect.

Laying claim to more than a third of Australia’s land mass, WA offers an abundance of what makes this country such a great place in which to travel – sandy coastlines, remote and quiet beaches, kilometres of untouched outback, picture-perfect mountainous sights, quirky wildlife and, of course, an abundance of locally grown and produced food and wine.

The long, dry summer months are the perfect time to hit the beaches. Whether it’s the iconic Cable Beach with its camel train or the picturesque Turquoise Bay, perfect for swimming and snorkelling, packing your bathers is a must.

The cooler winter months still offer warmer temperatures than the rest of the country, making it just the right time to explore the vast outback. Try your luck panning for gold in Kalgoorlie or simply take the time to travel along the peaceful and often deserted Nullarbor.  If you’re looking to be a little more active, take a hike around part of the Bungle Bungles, stopping to hear the echo of your own voice in the natural amphitheatre that is Cathedral Gorge.

If your trip sees you in WA in spring, then why not while away the days exploring the city of Perth? With its café culture and numerous sporting events, you’ll never be short of things to do in what is becoming quite a bustling city.

For those that enjoy a relaxed, cosmopolitan vibe, then spending a day or two exploring the dockside city of Fremantle will help you discover a side of WA you probably didn’t know existed.

And let’s not forget autumn, with its harvest and abundance of fruit and vegetables, making it a great time to head to Margaret River. With its delicious full-bodied red wines that are the ideal accompaniment to a locally-produced Camembert, Margaret River is the foodie heart of WA. No trip to the west would be complete without a little spot of gourmet indulgence!

Whatever time of the year you choose to visit WA, you certainly won’t be disappointed. The overall mild climate, relaxed vibe, stunning beaches and delicious food and wine, ensure that the west is indeed the best.
