A video that’s gone viral on social media shows housekeeping staff in five-star luxury hotels throughout China carrying out horrifically unhygienic practices.
Originally posted on Weibo, the video shows shocking footage of staff cleaning sinks and cups with the same sponge used to clean toilets, wiping surfaces with bath towels and using toilet water to clean floors.
The video claims that the staff seen in the footage were from hotels usually held in high esteem, such as the Waldorf Astoria in Shanghai, and those run by Shangri-La Asia and Hilton Worldwide – among others.
The video has had 29 million views, and has forced luxury hotel operators, including Marriott and Hilton, to apologise and promise further investigation of these unhygienic practices.
As reported by TravelTalk, China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism also issued a statement, saying that “all levels of cultural and tourism authorities should draw inferences and give high priority to the supervision of tourism service quality”.
Would this prevent you from booking accommodation at any of these hotels outside of China? Are you confident these practices are limited to China?
