Eating fried tarantulas in Cambodia

We couldn’t go past this week’s best travel selfie winner, Denis, for presenting proof of his bravery – eating a fried tarantula – during his Siem Reap/Angkor Wat travel experience.

In March last year my wife, Deanna, and I spent 16 days touring Vietnam and Cambodia with APT Tours. We spent two wonderful days exploring Hanoi city and then the beautiful Ha Long Bay.

After flying south to Saigon, we were able to sample some great local sights and foods before boarding our luxury river boat, Amalotus, and cruising up the mighty Mekong River for seven nights. Along the way we visited the riverside villages and markets. Visiting the Killing Fields in Cambodia was a very sad reminder of one of our world’s most brutal regimes.

During our bus journey to Siem Reap we stopped off at a local village market where we were greeted by children trying their hardest – and succeeding – to scare us with live tarantulas. I was brave enough to let one sit in my hand and then cringe as it slowly crawled up my arm. Our guide purchased a bag of deep fried tarantulas and once we were back on the bus a few of us were game enough to sample these local delicacies.

My selfie is shared with you as proof of my ‘courage’. The Siem Reap/Angkor Wat experience was an unforgettable end to an amazing adventure. We would recommend this region in Asia to anyone contemplating a first or future tour.
