Although I grew up in Scotland, my career in the navy took me all over the world and when it came time to settle, Halifax in Nova Scotia is where I chose to call home about 15 years ago. Now teaching geography, I love spending time around town and exploring the outdoors with my wife and two dogs and I’m only too happy to share what’s great about this city.
Best coffee
I would say at my house – my wife makes the best coffee – usually of the Irish variety but as I’m not too keen to give out my address, I would definitely suggest jumping on a ferry at Halifax harbour and heading to Dartmouth to Two if by Sea Café. Not only do you get to enjoy the trip, you’ll get a spot only really visited by locals and get to taste some of the best pastries ever!
Best cocktail
I’m not really a cocktail drinker, I definitely prefer some of the local craft beers, but I have it on good authority that Morris East is a great place to go. It has a lively atmosphere and great, fresh food that make it an easy place to spend some time.
Best breakfast
Honestly, there are so many good places to eat in and around the city but one of the most fun things to do is head to the Seaport Farmers’ Market. The stalls change pretty regularly, so wander around and have a taste of what’s on offer. Norbert’s GoodFood provides a farm to table experience and the food is not only delicious but as fresh as it can be.
Best local view
If you want to stay in the city and not venture too far, then I would suggest a trek up Citadel Hill, well known but for good reason. You’ll get a great view of the city as well being able to look around this historic site. If you fancy taking a drive, about an hour out of the city is Martinique Beach, which is the most beautiful stretch of sandy beach you’ll find on the east coast.
One fun thing you can do for free
With my navy background, I love to wander around Point Pleasant Park and take in the many historic military sites dotted around the area. There’s a free interactive map and you can scan the QR codes with your smartphone for more information on what happened at each specific site.
Something only a local knows about
The Harbour Hopper tour isn’t really something only a local knows but it’s a fun thing to do and a great way to see the city – sometimes you just have to do something touristy. This amphibious craft looks a big frog – one minute you’re driving around town and the next you’re heading into the water. Don’t worry about feeling a little foolish – no-one here cares.
Favourite thing to do in and around the area
As I mentioned before, I am a big fan of craft beers and there’s plenty of places in Halifax to taste some of the best. Many are within walking distance of each other but the public transport in Halifax is also accessible and cheap, so don’t be afraid to venture a little further around town – just map your route first. I wouldn’t want you to get lost while under the influence.
Why do you love this town?
It really is a small town in a city package. The people are friendly and it’s so relaxed. And obviously, with my Scottish roots, I never feel too homesick.
