While many Brits go to church on Sundays, I religiously go to ‘roasts’. Truth be told, I miss my mum’s Sunday roasts, so I have made it my mission to test out as many as possible and get back a little piece of home. Thanks to my intensive research, I can present you with my picks for the four best roasts in London.
Hawksmoor
Hawksmoor is well-known for its steak, selling all cuts of steak by size in grams. So you usually have to get in early to avoid all the smaller cuts being sold out. And it’s not cheap, to say the least. However, that all changes on a Sunday.
Hawksmoor offer a £25 (AU$42) Sunday roast which consists of their usual high-standard meat with all the trimmings. Saying they are generous serves doesn’t even begin to describe this Sunday dinner. With sides including Yorkshire pudding, carrots, cabbage and roasted potatoes, you can’t even see the plate for the pile of delicious food heaped upon it. Great value and a good way to experience their famous meat without the sky-high price point, this is easily my favourite place to spend a Sunday afternoon.
Harwood Arms
Okay, so I have to come clean, I haven’t actually been to the Harwood Arms yet, but it has been on my list for two and a half years now. Not only is it one of the very few Michelin pubs but it’s also widely regarded as one of best roasts in London. Accordingly it’s almost impossible to get a reservation unless you book far in advance. Don’t let this deter you though – Sunday roast is served on a sharing board and comes with all the trimmings including cauliflower cheese croquettes, roast potatoes, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding. It promises not to disappoint.
The Orange
The Orange is part of the Cubitt House group of pubs, and while all are well worth a visit, this one is my favourite. Set over two floors, the gastro pub offers a choice of beef, lamb or pork accompanied with Yorkshire puddings and vegetables. It’s reasonably priced, too, and they have a good range of red wines to accompany your roast. Sundays mean it’s often busy with locals partaking in arguably the best meal of the week in a light filled, breezy setting with major sports matches on the TV.
Blacklock
Blacklock is located in an old brothel at the bottom of a flight of stairs in Soho. Don’t let this put you off though – they really know their roasts. Blacklock’s menu offers your choice of rump steak (£18), leg of lamb (£17) or pork loin (£16) with all the trimmings, or all three for just £20 (AU $34) each for a minimum of two people. More meat than you’re likely to manage to get through! While the wine selection is minimal, their homemade dessert (they only make one per day) just about makes up for this and comes served in generous portions straight from the baking dish. Did I mention they also have £5 (AU $8) cocktails?!
Have you been to any other Sunday roasts that you’d recommend in the UK or closer to home in Australia?
