Important notice for travellers flying through Melbourne airport

It’s that time of year when many of us are eagerly packing our bags, ready to jet off on well-deserved holidays. However, if your travel plans include passing through Melbourne Airport, it’s time to take note of an important advisory that could affect your journey.

Melbourne Airport is bracing for a record-breaking season, with an estimated 4.8 million passengers expected to traverse its terminals between December 13 and January 27. This includes 1.8 million international travellers, all eager to explore distant shores or return home for the holidays.

But this surge in holidaymakers coincides with the airport’s major upgrades to its terminal and road infrastructure, which means that disruptions are inevitable.

To avoid missing your flight or starting your holiday with unnecessary stress, passengers are advised to allow at least an extra 30 minutes for their travel time. This is especially crucial during peak travel days when the volume of passengers can lead to longer queues and wait times.

For those planning to drive to the airport, be aware that parking may be more challenging due to the ongoing construction. Fewer car parks will be available, and Melbourne Airport CEO Lorie Argus states, ‘Where possible, we would advise passengers travelling to and from the airport to use the Terminal 4 car park drop off and pick up zones to avoid congestion in the main terminal forecourt.’

She added: ‘The forecast record international passenger numbers highlight the need for Melbourne Airport to start building its third runway, which was approved by the Federal Government in September.’

Jetstar is also preparing for its busiest Christmas and summer holiday peak period ever. The airline is expecting record numbers in Melbourne, with both airlines bolstering their staff numbers and standby aircraft to manage the anticipated influx and any unforeseen disruptions.

Similarly, Virgin Australia is gearing up for a record-breaking summer, urging travellers to allow additional time for airport security and check-in procedures. To expedite the process, the airline suggests checking in online and keeping gifts unwrapped if they’re in your carry-on luggage.

The busiest days for Virgin Australia are expected to be December 20, December 22, and December 27. With domestic capacity up from last year and higher than pre-Covid levels, Virgin Australia is preparing for up to 3,000 flights per week during the peak season.

Sydney Airport is not to be outdone, forecasting its busiest summer period of international travel since 2019, with 5.8 million people anticipated to pass through its terminals during the same period.

For those flying out of Melbourne or Sydney this summer, be sure to plan ahead, book early, and allow plenty of time for your airport experience. By doing so, you can ensure that your holiday spirit isn’t dampened before you even take off.
