For many of us, a reliable travel mug is a daily necessity. It’s the trusty companion that keeps our morning tea or coffee warm as we go about our day. However, a recent recall has shown that not all travel mugs are created equal, and some can even pose a safety risk.
Stanley, a brand well-known for its durable and high-quality products, has issued a recall for its 1913 series of travel mugs. The recall specifically targets the Switchback and Trigger Action models, which are stainless steel, double-walled mugs designed to keep beverages hot or cold for extended periods.
The issue at hand is with the mugs’ lids, which are made from polypropylene. It has been discovered that these lids can shrink when exposed to heat and torque. This defect can cause the lid to detach unexpectedly during use, which poses a significant risk if the mug contains hot liquid. The potential for burns is serious, and several incidents have already been reported worldwide, with some injuries requiring medical attention.
The affected products were sold nationally in Australia by authorised retailers from January 1, 2017, to December 31, 2022. They can be identified by the Stanley logo on the front and bottom of the mug and were available in various colours, including white, black, and green. The mugs also come in different sizes: 12 oz, 16 oz, and 20 oz.
To determine if your travel mug is part of the recall, look for the product identification numbers. For the Switchback model, the 12oz mug should display the number 20-01437, and the 16oz mug should display 20-01436. For the TriggerAction model, the 12oz mug will have the number 20-02033, the 16oz mug 20-02030, and the 20oz mug 20-02034.
Stanley has urged consumers to stop using the affected mugs immediately and has promised a free replacement lid. However, the replacement lids are not expected to become available until early 2025. In the meantime, Stanley will provide further details as they become available.
