It may not surprise you, but now it’s official – Australia is home to the world’s best cup of coffee. What may surprise you is that the barista who took out the title is based in Canberra.
While Melbourne is often referred to as the coffee capital of the country, Canberra barista Sasa Sestic was named the 2015 World Barista Champion at the 16th Annual World Barista Championship.
Held in Seattle, USA, the championship saw Sestic beat barista representatives from all around the world, including the USA, Canada, Hong Kong, United Kingdom and France.
An Olympic handball champion in a former life, Sestic takes his coffee very seriously. The founder and director of ONA Coffee, Sestic details the different blends of coffee available on his website, right down to the location of farms and even the names of the farm owners.
If you’re in Canberra you can test out the winning barista’s skills at ONA Coffee House in Fyshwick, the Cupping Room in the CBD, or ONA on the Lawns in Manuka. If you’re a coffee aficionado who doesn’t reside in Canberra, perhaps it’s time to take a trip to our nation’s capital?
So, what the secret of Sestic’s signature drink? A dash of Canberra district winemaker Tim Kirk’s Clonakilla shiraz viognier. We think his combining of two of life’s greatest pleasures is simply genius.
