With restaurants all around the world, the wait is finally over for Melbourne foodies. Renowned dumpling restaurant Din Tai Fung has just opened its doors at Melbourne’s Emporium shopping centre. With locations across Asia, the Taiwanese dumpling chain has been in Australia since 2008, with a current total of seven Sydney locations.
So what’s all the fuss about? Well, Din Tai Fung has been awarded a Michelin star, namely for the chain’s exacting standards. And, of course, for its the famous xiao long bao. Roughly translated to ‘little-basket steamed bun’. The famed dumplings are made by chefs who undergo three months of rigorous training. But, that’s only one aspect of the process.
Much of everything that Din Tai Fung makes is by hand, so the way it does business is labour intensive and requires plenty of discipline. That being said, the proof is in the dumplings, and they don’t disappoint.
The recently opened restaurant covers an entire upper floor in Emporium, consisting of 235 seats, as well as a waiting area, private dining rooms and a glass-enclosed dumpling-making area, which allows diners to watch the masters at work.
As with all good things don’t be surprised if you have to queue for a table. But rest assured, Din Tai Fung is definitely worth the wait.
