The idea of a holiday before your holiday may seem foreign, but I’ve taken a liking to spending a day or three in a layover destination while heading to my intended holiday location. Depending on where you are heading in the world, Singapore, Hong Kong, Brunei, Dubai and, as I found out recently, Hawaii, are some of the top stopover destinations worthy of a visit.
Penny’s layover in the Aloha state
Penny from Melbourne is visiting Las Vegas for her 20th wedding anniversary in May. She is looking to book flights from 21 May 2022, with a return flight back out of Las Vegas on 8 June 2022. The two most affordable options include layovers in Fiji and Hawaii.
Having never been to Hawaii previously, Penny is interested in splitting up her ticket into stages rather than one booking. $1704 return* is the best available price via Virgin Airlines (to get her to Sydney) and then Hawaiian Airlines to Las Vegas via a stopover in Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu on the island of Oahu, Hawaii.

Penny logs directly onto the Hawaiian Airlines website and inputs a flight date of 21 May 2022 from Melbourne to Honolulu. The same flight via Sydney comes up at $1084* for a return ticket.
Now, Penny decides she wants to stay in Hawaii for five days in total so inputs 26 May 2022 into the Hawaiian Airlines website for her flight to Las Vegas with a return date of 8 June 2022. The flight out, via LAX is obviously different to the one listed above, being on a different day, but she is able to book in the same flight back from Las Vegas to Honolulu to link up with her flight home. This return ticket come out to $648*.
In total, booking the two legs directly comes out to $1732*, just $28 more expensive than the direct route to Las Vegas.
