You’ve heard of camping, and probably even the glamorous step up: glamping. Now, one Melbourne man has taken glamping to the next level with new rooftop glamping site, St Jerome’s – The Hotel.
In something of a world first, Jerome Borazio has opened a five-star rooftop campsite in the middle of Melbourne’s CBD. Known for operating Melbourne city bar 1000£ Bend, Mr Borazio has chosen Melbourne Central’s expansive concrete rooftop as the site for the innovative venture.
Mr Borazio hopes the venture will breathe new life into the space, as the roof has regularly sat unused since Melbourne Central opened in 1991, with the owners unsuccessfully trying to find an ongoing use for the vast space above Lonsdale Street. General Manager, Justin Shannon, believes the plan will “create a truly special destination” for visitors.
The site has been transformed into a unique luxury overnight accommodation venue, which opened on 20 May, just ahead of the chilly Melbourne winter. But Mr Borazio is not worried about opening during the colder months, saying “the tents are of the highest standard in the world”.
Renting one of the 30 lodgings at St Jerome’s – The Hotel will not be an inexpensive affair. Prices are around the $330 mark, on par with other high-end accommodation options in the CBD. Mr Borazio acknowledges prices will be competitive, adding, “we are looking for someone with a spirit of adventure and wanting the unique experience of staying in a tent on a rooftop in the middle of a city”.
What do you think of this idea? Would you want to go glamping on a rooftop in the city?
