Streamlined travel between Australia and New Zealand with new airline partnership

Travelling between Australia and New Zealand is about to get much smoother, thanks to a fresh partnership between Virgin Australia and Air New Zealand. This collaboration is set to enhance the travel options for Aussies flying across the Tasman, making the journey to our Kiwi neighbours more convenient than ever.

Starting Monday, 9 December, passengers looking to visit popular destinations such as Auckland and Christchurch can book flights under a new codeshare agreement. This means travellers can directly book flights operated by Air New Zealand with a Virgin Australia flight number, streamlining the booking process and offering a more cohesive travel experience.

The agreement will impact flights departing from various Australian cities, including Sydney and Melbourne, heading to key New Zealand cities like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch. This is a significant update for overseas travellers, particularly those who frequently make the trans-Tasman trip for business, leisure, or to connect with family and friends.

Alistair Hartley, Virgin Australia’s chief strategy and transformation officer, emphasised the significance of the partnership, stating that it reflects the deep connection between the two countries.

‘The connection between Australia and New Zealand has always been deeper than just a stretch of ocean, and our new partnership celebrates that enduring bond,’ he said.

Hartley also highlighted that the codeshare agreement is more than just about flights; it’s about creating seamless travel experiences that offer Virgin Australia customers more ways to explore and adventure in New Zealand.

The sentiment was echoed by Air New Zealand’s general manager for Australia, Kathryn O’Brien, who pointed out the benefits for Kiwis living in Australia. According to her, the deal simplifies the process for them to ‘make the short hop across the ditch,’ whether for personal or professional reasons.

O’Brien also noted that the partnership opens up more opportunities and destinations across New Zealand, making it easier for travellers to plan their trips.

For Virgin Australia guests and Velocity Frequent Flyer members, the deal brings additional perks. They will be eligible for benefits and rewards on Virgin Australia flights operated by Air New Zealand, adding value to their travel experience. This integration of services is a strategic move that will likely appeal to loyal customers of both airlines.

Moreover, the codeshare flights will join services already operated by Virgin Australia from Australia to Queenstown, another favourite destination for skiers and adventure seekers.

This expansion of flight options is part of Virgin Australia’s commitment to delivering unprecedented network coverage, loyalty rewards, and travel flexibility. The aim is to make international travel as effortless as possible, enhancing the overall customer experience.

We’d love to hear your thoughts on this new partnership. Will it change the way you travel to New Zealand? Are there any particular destinations you’re now more inclined to visit? Share your travel plans and any tips for making the most of this new travel deal in the comments below!
