Already known for re-imagining modern, luxury cruising, Celebrity Cruises are pushing the envelope even further with its new line of cruise ships.
Maybe that’s why Celebrity has named this prototype for its new class of ships Edge.
“When it came time to choose a name for this visionary vessel, we looked to the very thing that makes this ship so unique: the fact that during two years of exploration and excitement, every single design element has been taken to the leading edge of possibility. The name was right there in front of us,” says a statement from Celebrity Cruises.
Known for boutique cruises with luxury amenities, the new ship aims to set a benchmark for the fleet. Little wonder then that its arrival is the most anticipated cruise event of the year.
The Edge boasts never-before-seen features, such as the exterior ‘magic carpet’ – an extraordinary cantilevered platform with multiple moods, functions and locations. Positioned on the side of the ship, this incredible feat of engineering floats to heights of 13 stories above sea level. On one level, it’s a bar, another a restaurant; and on sea level, a breathtaking viewing area. And with space for fun and live music performances, it truly is a reason to get onboard.
Another reason is the three-story public area featuring restaurants, lounges and bars known as ‘The Eden’ or, so says Celebrity, “the room that lives”. Here, guests will enjoy enrichment programs and activities such yoga and cooking classes. By night, the area transforms into an entertainment space which integrates theatre with dining and nightlife.
The staterooms and cabins, designed by award-winning London designer Kelly Hoppen, are where Celebrity Cruises really pushes cruising to the ‘edge’.
In fact, 60 per cent of the Edge’s 1467 cabins are Edge Staterooms, which feature infinite verandas, where, through the use of special bi-fold doors, your room blends seamlessly with the balcony area.
“Kelly’s vision evokes the intimacy of an inviting, indulgent urban apartment…that just happens to open out onto the most beautiful scenery in the world,” says Celebrity.
If you really want to be spoilt, you could upgrade to one of the huge Iconic Suites, which are about as big as a Sydney apartment, or go even more opulent and splash out on a Penthouse Suite or an Edge Villa – both spaces setting the standard for luxury cruising everywhere.
The Edge will feature 29 eateries and bars, four main dining rooms and seven new specialty restaurants, as well as private and public pools and lounges, 24/7 butler services and a host of rooftop games and activities, huge entertainment theatre with four stages and three projection screens, and an outdoor cinema, plus much more.
Celebrity Edge will be christened at Fort Lauderdale on Florida in December 2018 and will sail to the Caribbean before calling the Mediterranean home for the 2019 summer season.
