When the sun goes away, it doesn’t mean you can’t still play! It might be winter Down Under, but around the world, spring and summer are blooming.
So, here are seven warm and wonderful destinations for keen holidaymakers planning to chase the sun this month or escape the winter next year.
1. Islands of French Polynesia
With over 60 islands to choose from, it’s hard to go wrong in French Polynesia. Tahiti is the most famous spot, but don’t overlook other beautiful destinations such as Bora Bora, Mo’orea and Huahine.
It’s not all about the beaches either (although they are stunning) – many islands offer opportunities to hike mountains, explore forests, visit villages and dine outdoors.
2. Kyoto, Japan
As soon as the summer disappears in Oz, consider heading to Kyoto.
You’ll be surrounded by beautiful ancient dwellings and shrines, amazing museums, theatres offering traditional shows, and a food market that’s to die for.
Bear in mind it can get very hot (and sometimes rainy) from June (summer) onwards, but balancing indoor and outdoor activities is the key to enjoying your stay if you choose to travel during this time.
3. San Francisco, USA
They say you could leave your heart in San Francisco … and there’s only one way to find out!
Mild summers here make it ideal for city exploring, from iconic sights including the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz to walks along the Pier or through Golden Gate Park.
Summer can be busy, so book as early as you can and keep an eye out for hotel deals, especially in spots such as Nob Hill and the Marina, which can be cheaper than staying in the middle of the city.
4. Madagascar, Africa
If you’re after sunshine without the high heat and humidity in June, July or August, put Madagascar on your itinerary.
You’ll get to combine the best of a coastal island holiday with gorgeous wilderness, and those famous lemurs!
June is ideal if you want to avoid the school holiday crowds flocking from Europe, but if you’re a fan of whale watching, aim for July and August when the whales stay put at Ile Saint Marie.
5. Amalfi Coast, Italy
Yeah, we know – Italy can be notoriously hot in summer, but if you love the idea of chasing the sun and heat, the Amalfi Coast, with its beaches and cliff-side living, can be an inspiring place to be.
You can stay put and relax in Positano, explore the ruins in Salerno, organise a day tour to Pompeii or even drive the whole magnificent coastline.
Staying by the water or dining indoors is a great way to keep cool on hotter days.
6. Edinburgh, Scotland
Long days are a huge perk of the Scottish summer, and with temperatures averaging around 19-20°C you can catch the sun but skip the heat.
Staying in Edinburgh means making the most of monuments including castles, abbeys, cathedrals and fortresses, while also soaking up the culture of the pubs and local streets.
Proximity here also makes it a great home base for side trips to places such as Glasgow, Dundee, Inverness and Loch Ness. Don’t forget to try the haggis and black pudding!
