World’s first wine fountain is here

In news that will delight wine lovers around the world, fountains are changing for the better by offering wine as opposed to water. If there was ever any doubt that Italians do everything better, there isn’t anymore.

Indisputably one of the world’s best destinations for food and wine, the Abruzzo region is now home to the world’s first wine fountain, or Fontana del Vino as it happens to be called in Italian.

The brainchild of the Dora Sarchese Vineyard, the fountain has a prime location on the Cammino di San Tommaso, a pilgrimage route from Rome to Ortona. Using social media to explain the reasoning behind the initiative, the vineyard said it wanted the Fontana del Vino to offer a warm welcome to all who are travelling on the Cammino di San Tommaso.

Somewhat of a game changer for tourists, travellers on the trail can stop at the fountain any time of the day or night and help themselves to some wine. Did we mention it’s free?

For those who aren’t familiar with the Cammino di San Tommaso, the main purpose of the route is to see the Basilica of St Thomas the Apostle, where St. Thomas’ remains are kept. Maintained by a non-profit organisation, the Dora Sarchese Vineyard teamed up with the organisation to create this innovative fountain.

And for those of you who have dreams of getting merry for free, or going overboard, the vineyard is quick to mention that this fountain is not for “drunkards” or “louts”.

Whatever the reason behind this brilliant initiative we can only hope that more fountains around the world follow suit in turning water to wine.

Meanwhile, if you’re still reading this we suggest you head straight to Skyscanner and start booking your next trip to Italy stat, before the fountain of youth runs dry.
