World’s cheapest destinations

Most of us love a holiday, but finances can often be the one thing that prevents us from heading off. Today, we share the top five global destinations that give you the most bang for your buck.

Bolivia
This may be the least expensive country in South America, but Bolivia’s sights are priceless. Check out Lake Titicaca for some of the most picturesque panoramas you’ll ever see. Visit the spectacular salt flats of Salar de Uyuni or go bargain-hunting in the world’s highest capital city, La Paz. There’s plenty to keep you occupied, whether you’re into relaxing or seeking adventure and you can do it with a daily budget of around $25 per person – no joke.

Bulgaria
Bulgaria isn’t at the forefront of most people’s minds when they think of a European holiday, but its black sand beaches and beautiful cities make it a true hidden gem. Add to that the fact that it is the cheapest place to visit in Europe – and with beers costing a mere dollar – you simply can’t go past Bulgaria as a brilliant budget destination. And if black sand isn’t your bag, then head to the popular Sunny Beach on the Black Sea Coast. Its golden sand and Mediterranean climate make it one of the best budget beach destinations in the world.

Cambodia
With accommodation and food that costs dollars per day – and we’re talking between $10–$30 dollars per day – it’s little wonder that Cambodia is now a favourite destination for budget travellers. Cambodia is the very definition of travelling on a shoestring budget, and yes, you’ll need to be a little more dauntless on your journey, but this Southeast Asian destination can provide you with a seriously memorable travel experience.

India
Once you pay for your flights, which if you don’t find the right deal can be a little costly, India is one of the cheapest places that you can visit. The beaches at Goa are simply stunning, and you can get accommodation for next to nothing right alongside the shore. The Darjeeling hills are staggering and you can stay there for a week for less than it would cost you for one night in most major cities. Head to the Himalayas for a transformative travel experience that won’t ruin your bank account. Seriously, decent accommodation will only set you back around $12 per night. That’s cheaper than staying at home!

Vietnam
Although this Asian hotspot has enjoyed increasing popularity over the last decade, it’s still surprisingly easy on the bottom line, with average guesthouse accommodation costing as little as $10 per night. Vietnam’s hustling and bustling streets are also home to some of the best street food that you’ll find, and at $2 for the average meal, some of the cheapest as well. Once you’re out of the city, you can visit the UNESCO listed, Hoi An and head to the world’s cheapest beach destination, Cua Dai Beach.

Albania
Situated at the top of Greece, Albania shares the same ocean views as the considerably more expensive Venice, but at a fraction of the cost. Albania has had a chequered past, but now that its Stalinist ways are gone, its white sandy beaches and stunning mountain ranges are primed for discovery. The picture-perfect Albanian coastline at Vlora has been favourably compared to Spain of 50 years ago, but is still relatively unexplored by tourists and costs way less to visit.

They may not be at the top of your bucket list, but if you’re looking for a cheap holiday and you head there at the right time of year, these countries are well worth checking out. Before you visit though, it’d be wise to visit smarttraveller.gov.au for safety tips.
