Why you feel drained after a break—and how to bounce back

The holiday season has come and gone, leaving behind a trail of memories and a sense of longing that many of us can’t seem to shake off. It’s a common scenario: the excitement and anticipation of a well-deserved break give way to the reality of returning to our daily routines, and suddenly, we find ourselves grappling with a case of the post-holiday blues.

This phenomenon isn’t just a figment of our collective imagination. It’s a real psychological experience that can leave us feeling deflated, nostalgic, and sometimes even a little sad. As we pack away our suitcases and tackle the mountain of laundry, we can’t help but reminisce about the recent past and the freedom we enjoyed.

But why does this happen? According to Kieren, a psychologist working with IHG Hotels and Resorts, our brains have a tendency to view our holidays through ‘rose-tinted glasses.’ During our time off, we experience an increase in mood and positive emotions, which our minds amplify, making those days seem even brighter in retrospect. This can make our return to the regular grind feel particularly jarring, as we’re suddenly confronted with a ‘lower’ baseline level of mood and emotions.

So, how do we combat these post-holiday blues? Kieren suggests a few strategies that can help us navigate this tricky period.

Firstly, it’s important to acknowledge your feelings and understand that it’s perfectly normal to feel this way. Recognising that these emotions are temporary and will likely pass within a few days to weeks can provide some much-needed perspective.

Taking care of your body and mind is also crucial. Ensuring you get enough sleep, eat regular meals with a balanced diet, and engage in regular exercise or movement can help stabilise your mood, boost your energy, and ward off negative thoughts.

Socialising with friends and family can also play a significant role in lifting your spirits. Simply talking about the post-holiday slump with others can improve your mood and help you rebalance emotionally.

And let’s not forget the power of looking forward. Planning your next holiday or adventure can provide a sense of excitement and something to look forward to. But it’s not just about planning another escape; it’s also about grounding yourself in your future goals and plans. This can help shift your focus from the past to the future, giving you a sense of direction and purpose.
