A themed cruise set to sail in 2020 could turn out to be the world’s dumbest.
The Flat Earth International Conference (FEIC) has organised its own cruise described on its website as ‘the biggest, boldest, best adventure yet’.
While details surrounding the cruise remain scarce, according to Live Science, Flat Earthers intend to test their theory that the planet is flat and surrounded by a wall of ice that is the frozen barrier marking the edge of our world.
“If you take a globe and you squish it down, the Antarctic would go all the way around the Earth,” FEIC founder Robbie Davidson told Forbes.
“It’s kind of like an ice shore, and it’s very, very large. It’s not like you just go there, and you can just peek over it. We don’t believe anything can fall off the edge because a big portion of the flat earth community believes that we’re in a dome, like a snow globe.
“So, the sun, moon and stars are all inside. It’s very high but all contained inside. So, there’s no way to actually fall off of the earth.”
While this may seem ridiculous to some (or many, or pretty much all), the real kicker is how this cruise will find its way to the ‘edge of the world’.
“Ships navigate based on the principle that the Earth is round,” former cruise ship captain Henk Keijer told The Guardian.
“Nautical charts are designed with that in mind: that the Earth is round.
“I have not encountered one sea captain who believes the Earth is flat,” he added.
Flat Earthers say that ‘evidence for a flat earth is derived from many different facets of science and philosophy’.
According to the group’s website, ‘The simplest [evidence] is by relying on one’s own senses to discern the true nature of the world around us. The world looks flat, the bottoms of clouds are flat, the movement of the Sun; these are all examples of your senses telling you that we do not live on a spherical heliocentric world.”
Will the cruise provide Flat Earthers with the evidence to support their claims? Will the rest of us end up with egg on our faces?
“All we have to do to shut this debate down once and for all is get the distance of the coast of Antarctica,” Flat Earther Jay Decasby told Forbes.
“If we can get to the coast of Antarctica and sail all the way around it, we will get the distance that will prove it’s the outer edges of flat earth and refute entirely every single argument anyone can possibly try to pitch for the sun-worshipping cult of heliocentrism.”
However, it seems that Antarctica is not the planned destination. In fact, Robbie Davidson said that is the one place they won’t be going.
