DIY home makeover on a budget

Does your place need a spruce but the funds to make this happen are non-existent? Giving your home a makeover doesn’t have to cost a lot. It’s all about being resourceful and creative. Here are five ways to give your place a facelift without breaking the bank.

Replace hardware and fittings
One of the simplest and most striking things you can do is to update old doorknobs and outdated light fittings with shiny new ones. This is especially important in the kitchen and bathroom, where the smallest change can sometimes transform the space completely.

Create a gallery wall
This idea is so simple yet very effective, perfect for homes with limited wall space. A gallery wall is essentially a collage of photos (framed or unframed) to create a definitive statement for your home. The best part is that you can use photographs of family and friends.

Rearrange the furniture
Perhaps this goes without saying but rearranging the furniture in your house is sometimes all you need to feel like you’re living in a new place. You’ll be surprised by how different your home (and you) will feel just by switching things around. Well, they do say that a change is as good as a holiday, after all.

Let in the light
Add light to dimmer rooms with decorative glass blocks, vases, mirrors, metal surfaces, glossy paint and ceramic tiles. Light and reflective surfaces deliver the illusion of light and extra space. Crystal accents also offer shine and elegance to lampshades and chandeliers.

When in doubt, add pot plants
People don’t use plants as much as they used to but a nice fern can really bring a room to life. Collect plants and group them together in one room at varying heights; one on the bureau, one on the side table and one on the floor. If you have a dark or an empty space, such as a non-working fireplace, a pot plant can help to liven it up. Delicate accents such as candles and ceramic objects add additional points of interest.
