Apple Brown Betty

Remember Apple Brown Betty? Our version will have you reminiscing about the good ol’ times. If you haven’t ever tried ‘Betty’, this is your chance to see how good this treat is.

Serves: Eight

Time: 65 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 apples, cored
  • 7 slices wholemeal bread
  • 3/4 cups salted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, plus extra for sprinkling
  • 3 tablespoons water

Method

Preheat the oven to 190°C. Peel and thinly slice the apples and then tear the bread into very small pieces. Grease a small baking dish with butter and then add one-third of the brown sugar and one-third of the apple and then one-third of the breadcrumbs. Repeat this twice more, ending with the breadcrumb layer.

Slice butter and lay slices over the top. Sprinkle over the water and some brown sugar, cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove the foil for the last few minutes to brown the top. Serve with ice-cream or cream.
