Doubletree gets two thumbs up

We’re in town on a Saturday night to catch a gig at Rod Laver Arena, so it’s a great opportunity to stay in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD. Upon arrival at the recently opened Doubletree by Hilton in Flinders Street, we’re welcomed warmly by the staff. And a complimentary walnut and chocolate cookie really hits the spot, offering an indication of the high standard of hospitality we are about to experience.

Our room on the 12th floor faces the iconic Flinders Street Station and a sweeping vista beyond with views of many of Melbourne’s major attractions: Southbank, the Eureka Tower, the Arts Centre precinct and Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), to mention just a few. It’s easy to pass time merely looking out the window! Further south is Government House, the verdant greenery of the Botanic Gardens, the spire of South Yarra’s Christ Church and even the blue hills of the Dandenongs are clearly visible.

A pre-concert drink downstairs gives us time to enjoy the designer values of the lobby, bar and restaurant area, which features quirky accents offsetting décor that walks a fine line between trendy and relaxed. Distressed concrete walls, rich red rugs and industrial steel shelving hit the right note in this retail and railway precinct.

But what really sets the Doubletree apart from other hotels in Melbourne’s CBD is its absolutely unbeatable location. It’s perfectly positioned for a stroll across the Yarra to a concert or sporting event at Rod Laver, Hisense Arena or the MCG. It’s also a stone’s throw from Federation Square, the National Gallery of Victoria (currently showing the fantastic Warhol/Wei Wei exhibition), as well as the city’s numerous funky laneways. Should you wish to venture a little further out of town, you need only cross the road to Flinders Street Station or the closest tram stop.

It’s not everyday you get to meet the ‘former king’ of Dublin’s Hilton Hotel, Patrick, dishing out the highest level of hospitality and humour in equal measure. Patrick makes sure our breakfast is a memorable experience. His joie de vivre infects our fellow diners, eliciting laughter and banter from those tucking into the delicious buffet. Coffee is served in a minimal waiting time by none other than ‘DJ Dave’, nicknamed by Patrick, naturally. With a secret weapon such as Patrick up its sleeve, the service at the Doubletree, just like the location, is a tour de force.

Providing five-star value at a four-star price, the Doubletree offers an accessible and fun Hilton experience. Whether you are planning a night out in Melbourne’s CBD or just fancy a mid-week city break, look no further than this character-filled hotel!
