According to travel and booking website TripAdvisor, Bali has been crowned the best destination in the world.
TripAdvisor annually compiles a list of favourite destinations around the world for its Travellers’ Choice Awards. It does so by using an algorithm that takes into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, restaurants and attractions at destinations worldwide over a 12-month period.
As an affordable destination with global appeal and beautiful beaches, Bali easily topped the list – the only destination from the Asia-Pacific region in the top five.
The second-place destination Bali beat couldn’t be more different. After all, London is much less affordable and not at all known for its sunny climate or beautiful beaches.
London was number one on the list last year, but may have lost its spot because, for the first time since it began compiling the ratings, TripAdvisor took islands into account.
Six places inside the top 10 were taken by cities in Europe, while only one North American city, New York, was listed within the top 10.
Australia did not rate a mention in the top 25 destinations, but Sydney was considered Australia’s best destination, closely followed by Melbourne and Lord Howe Island.
