Spontaneous travel apps

For the majority of us travel is something that needs to be scheduled and organised well in advance. But if you are one of the lucky ones that can do it on the hop, here are two smart-device ways to make the rising trend of spontaneous travel a reality.

Srprs.me
Aptly named Surprise Me, this innovative company was born in the Netherlands in 2014. Reigniting the adventure that travel is supposed to hold, this is not a site for control freaks.

The concept is simple yet somewhat brilliant. All you have to do is sign up, select a date, budget and theme – backpacking (no thank you) or city break. Surprise Me will then provide you with an idea of what the weather will be like to assist with your packing (not all surprises are good). Your final destination isn’t revealed until you get to the airport, when it’s arguably too late to back out.

Perhaps not ideal if you have a set destination in mind, this really is one for those with a true sense of adventure … or the extremely indecisive.

LuckyTrip
Playing on the concept (and name) of lucky dip, this app will help organise a holiday centred around your budget.

Intuitive and user-friendly, LuckyTrip lets you set your maximum budget for flights and accommodation. Similar to Surprise Me, it also wants you to input your desired dates and choose one of their themes ranging from adventure to culture vulture.

Scanning aggregate sites including Skyscanner and Booking.com, LuckyTrip reports back with suggestions on where you may like to go, stay and even suggests activities – all within the budget you set.

Flexible with dates? Select ‘lucky mode’ for the best deals.

The app is free from Apple iTunes.
